SPS notifications

SPS measures are a form of non-tariff barriers adopted by governments to ensure that food is safe for consumers, and to prevent the spread of pests or diseases among plants and animals. They are governed by the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement (SPS Agreement) which aims to ensure that these measures protect human, animal, plant life or health while avoiding unnecessary barriers to trade.

Notifications are issued by member countries of WTO to alert trading partners about proposed new SPS measures and changes to existing SPS measures through SPS notifications prior to them being implemented.

The Sanitary and Phytosanitary Information Management System (SPSIMS) is a comprehensive database allowing users to search all notified SPS measures and Specific Trade Concerns (STCs) raised in the SPS Committee. Users can also browse information on SPS National Notification Authorities and Enquiry Points, as well as other SPS-related documents circulated at the WTO.
