Reproductive Health Unit
The Reproductive Health Unit (RHU) of the Livestock and Veterinary Division (LVD) is involved in both service provision and regulatory duties as follows:
Service provision
- Provision of artificial insemination service to dairy cattle which involves assisting in procurement of semen (drafting of technical specifications), semen evaluation, handling of semen, storage of semen, transportation of semen and performing artificial insemination on field
- Performing pregnancy diagnosis in cattle
- Attending to infertility cases in livestock
- Assisting in the procurement of veterinary medicinal products necessary for the treatment or prevention of infertility
- Data recording and analysis of data relevant to reproductive health in livestock
- Implementing or assisting in the implementation of projects related to reproductive health of livestock
- Use of digital technologies and adopting new advancement in the field of reproductive health of livestock
- Advise higher management in matters related to reproductive health in livestock
Regulatory duties:
- Enforcement of the ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION OF ANIMALS (CONTROL) ACT of 1946 and the ANIMAL DISEASE ACT OF 1925
- Certification of semen
- Regulating import and export of semen and other genetic materials such as embryo
- Regulating the collection of semen or embryo or ovum and performing of artificial insemination or embryo transplant in animal species
- Ensure that animal welfare is being respected while manipulating animals with the intention of breeding and reproduction
- Official controls on establishment manipulating animals with an intention to perform artificial breeding and reproduction
