Animal Health Surveillance and Epidemiology Unit

The Animal Health Surveillance and Epidemiology Unit (AHSEU) of the Livestock and Veterinary Division are responsible for the following:

  • Running the Animal Health Laboratory
  • Conducting necropsy of animal carcasses upon request of the Police
  • Gross pathology
  • Collection, transport, storage of samples for diagnosis purposes
  • Animal disease surveillance by serological tests.
  • Implementing early disease detection and response strategies in respect to infectious diseases
  • Meat speciation tests
  • Performing diagnostic tests in regards to diseases (microbiological, serological).
  • Performing screening to provide evidence for presence or absence of disease in the animal population
  •  Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing for antimicrobial resistance.
  • Performing screening to provide evidence for presence or absence of disease in the animal population
  • Implement the regulatory requirements and ensure compliance with existing veterinary legislations
