Animal Welfare Unit
This unit verifies compliance with the provisions of the Animal Welfare Act 2013 and regulations made thereunder and deals with issues such as illegal breeding of dogs, cruelty or ill-treatment of animals. Authorised officers of this unit can issue notice of non-compliance.
The Animal Welfare Unit is mandated to:
- attend to complaints regarding ill-treatment of animals as per provisions stipulated in section 3, 32 and 36 of the Animal Welfare Act 2013. Complaints are received by phone, through emails, correspondences and on the Citizen Support Portal
- process applications for registration of dog breeders and issue breeder’s permit as per section 36 of the Animal Welfare Act 2013;
- process applications for the holding of dog shows and issue a permit regarding same as per section 37 of the Animal Welfare Act 2013;
- attend to requests received from the Police Department for the placing of monkey traps in residential areas and the eventual release of any trapped monkeys back into the wild;
- to perform inspections on animal farms with respect to animal welfare.
